Veteran artiste and actress, Ms. Onyeka Onwenu, has passed away in Lagos at the age of 72.
Onyeka Onwenu reportedly died at the Reddington Hospital after collapsing at the 80th birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli, the CEO of Emzor Pharmaceutical.
An eyewitness at the party shared the sad news, saying, “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today, and after performing, she sat down and slumped. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital GRA Ikeja where she was pronounced dead.”
Ms. Onwenu, a US-trained broadcaster, became famous in the 1980s when she joined the Nigerian Television Authority.
She later became one of Nigeria’s top female musicians, known for her award-winning albums and hit songs.
She also ventured into acting, where she achieved great success.
In addition to her entertainment career, Onyeka Onwenu was involved in politics. She once served as a Local Government Chairman in Imo State.
