The Adamawa State Police have reported that a 30-year-old man, Abdullahi Mohammed, was admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Yola for a mental health evaluation.
Beyond Boders recalls that last Friday, Mohammed climbed a high-voltage electricity pole in Mayo-Belwa, demanding that President Bola Tinubu resign.
Police spokesperson, Suleiman Nguroje, said Mohammed is undergoing psychiatric tests after officers from Mayo-Belwa division rescued him. The police found hard drugs, including Indian hemp, on him during the arrest. Mohammed admitted to using drugs, which likely affected his behaviour.
“He was behaving abnormal, so we had to take him to the psychiatric hospital for a detailed medical examination. We are still waiting for the medical result before we can take the next action,” Nguroje explained.
The police also confirmed that attempting suicide is a crime under Nigerian law. Mohammed’s case will be handled according to the law, as authorities work to protect lives and maintain public safety.
Mohammed, who is from Gashaka town in Taraba State, was eventually convinced to come down from the pole on Saturday after locals helped the police.
