Granddaughter to former South African president Nelson Mandela, Zoleka Mandela has passed on at the age of forty-three (43), after battling with cancer.
The South African write who died on Tuesday, was admitted to the hospital on Monday as part of her continuous treatment after she had battled cancer for several years.
Surrounded by friends and family, according to the family spokeswoman, Zwelabo Mandela, the activist passed away, as gathered by Beyond Boders.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation had in a statement said that Zoleka’s work in raising awareness about cancer prevention and her unwavering commitment to breaking down the stigma surrounding the disease will continue to inspire us all.
“We mourn the loss of a beloved grandchild of Mum Winnie and Madiba.
“Her work in raising awareness about cancer prevention and her unwavering commitment to breaking down the stigma surrounding the disease will continue to inspire us all.”
That Zoleka was the daughter of Mandela’s youngest daughter, Zindzi Mandela, and her first husband, Zwelibanzi Hlongwane, is an important fact to note.
As a a dedicated advocate for cancer awareness and prevention, the tragic demise of this activist is a loss for South Africa and the world.
