At least 95 people have died, and 130 others are injured after a powerful earthquake hit Tibet on Tuesday morning, Chinese state media reports.
The earthquake struck Shigatse city, a sacred area in Tibet, around 9:00 am local time (01:00 GMT). It had a magnitude of 7.1 and a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles), according to the US Geological Survey. Several aftershocks were also recorded in the region.
The quake’s tremors were felt in nearby Nepal and parts of India. This area is known for frequent earthquakes because it sits on a major fault line.
This earthquake is one of the deadliest in China in recent years. Videos from China’s state broadcaster CCTV show rescue workers moving through rubble, helping people, and distributing thick blankets. Many buildings have been destroyed or severely damaged.
In Tingri county, near the earthquake’s centre, temperatures are very low, about -8°C (17.6°F), and expected to drop to -18°C (0°F) by night, according to the China Meteorological Administration. Power and water supplies in the area have also been affected.
