The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed efforts to stop the recruitment activities of a new terror group, Lukarawa, which is seeking to strengthen its forces.
The DHQ revealed that Lukarawa has begun recruiting members in the northern regions, specifically in Sokoto and Kebbi states. This new group reportedly emerged from activities spreading from Niger Republic and Mali after recent political changes.
Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Media Operations, noted that the military, along with other security agencies and state authorities, is working hard to block the group’s recruitment efforts. He explained that Lukarawa is attracting local youths with promises of welfare packages and religious teachings, even using social media to reach a wider audience.
The group recently attacked Mera town in Kebbi State, targeting people as they gathered for prayers, leaving 15 people dead and seizing 100 cattle.
In addition, former State Security Services Director Mike Ejiofor shared that while Lukarawa has existed since 2018, the group does not yet pose a severe threat.
“Nevertheless, we know of these plans and are working together with other security forces and the state government to thwart the efforts of the terrorists,” he added.
Security expert Timothy Avele also stressed the importance of targeting the group’s finances and leadership to weaken its influence, noting that the financial struggles of many people in the region make it easier for Lukarawa to attract new recruits.
Authorities are encouraging community support and increased vigilance to help curb the spread of this new group.
