Netflix, the global movie streaming platform, has reportedly ended its operations in the Nigerian movie industry.
This was revealed by Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan during the 2024 Zuma Film Festival.
Although Netflix has not officially announced its exit, Afolayan, who has worked on several projects with the platform, confirmed the news. He mentioned that the decision was intentionally kept away from public attention.
Netflix started operating in Nigeria in 2016 and became a major supporter of Nollywood by funding and promoting local films. However, reports from “Nollywood Wire” indicate that Netflix officially left the Nigerian market in November 2024.
The platform reportedly informed its regular collaborators about its decision to reduce investments in Nigerian content. So far, Netflix has not explained the reason behind its withdrawal.
This exit is seen as a big change for the Nigerian film industry, which relied on Netflix for global exposure and financial support.
