The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has shown support for a Lagos-based National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ushie Uguamaye, also known as Raye, who said she received threats after criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s government.
TUC President, Festus Osifo, spoke about the issue during an interview on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics.” He said the young woman was only expressing her frustration and urged the government to be tolerant instead of going after critics.
“They (government) have to develop this resilience to understand that people are frustrated, people are hungry, people are tired. So, if they decide to vent, I strongly believe that the government should not personalise it and come after such individuals,” Osifo said.
However, he advised people to express their opinions with respect and within reasonable limits.
Raye became widely known after posting a video on TikTok where she criticized the government’s policies and economic conditions.
In the video, she said hard work no longer guarantees financial stability in Nigeria. She also called Tinubu a “terrible leader” and questioned the government’s efforts to reduce citizens’ suffering.
After the video went viral, Raye claimed that some NYSC officials pressured her to delete it. However, the NYSC has not released any official statement on the matter.
