The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has ordered its members in states where the new minimum wage has not been paid to begin an indefinite strike on December 1, 2024.
This decision came after the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting over the weekend.
According to the NEC, some state governments have ignored or delayed the implementation of the 2024 Minimum Wage Act.
The NLC expressed disappointment, stating, “This betrayal by certain governors and government officials across the country flies in the face of both legality and morality, as workers continue to be denied their rightful wages amidst rising economic hardship.”
The NLC plans to establish a National Minimum Wage Implementation Committee. This committee will visit different states, inform workers and the public about their rights, and push for the full enforcement of the minimum wage law.
The NLC has made it clear that industrial actions will take place in any state where the minimum wage has not been fully paid by November 30, 2024.
Regarding Nigeria’s worsening economic situation, the NLC highlighted the rising costs of essential goods and services. It called on the Federal Government to provide real solutions, such as better social protections, affordable healthcare, and wages that match the cost of living.
The NLC also urged a national wage review and policies that would truly benefit Nigerians.
