The organizers of the Paris Olympics have said sorry after a performance in the opening ceremony upset some people.
The skit featured drag stars in a scene that looked like Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting “The Last Supper.”
Many viewers, including Catholic leaders and conservatives like Elon Musk and Donald Trump Jr., were not happy with this.
Anne Descamps, a spokesperson for the Paris Olympics, talked to reporters on Sunday, saying they did not mean to disrespect any religious group.
Thomas Jolly, the creative director of the opening ceremony, wanted to show “community tolerance.”
Descamps mentioned that many people liked the skit, but they are “really, really sorry” to those who were offended.
In the performance, LGBTQ+ icon Barbara Butch wore a silver, halo-like headdress while sitting at a table with other drag artistes. Athletes floated on the Seine river below them.
Organizers said the skit was meant to show the Greek God of wine and festivity, Dionysus. However, the scene looked very similar to “The Last Supper,” which shows Jesus and his 12 apostles, and this upset some viewers.
Jolly said the scene was not a direct recreation of “The Last Supper” but a celebration of feasting and French food.
