The Lagos State Police have arrested Dr. Idara Bassey, a medical doctor linked to the death of a 36-year-old woman during a buttock enlargement surgery in Lekki Phase 1.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that Bassey is being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti.
Dr. Bassey had fled after Abiola, a patient, died following a buttock enlargement procedure at her clinic on August 26, 2024.
The procedure, known as a Brazilian Butt Lift, involves moving fat from other body parts to the buttocks to make them fuller and rounder. This surgery is known to have risks, as seen in 2019 when a 31-year-old British woman, Melissa Kerr, died during a similar procedure in Turkey.
Despite warnings about the surgery’s dangers, some women in Lagos have shared videos online claiming successful results.

The police also arrested a nurse who administered an injection to the late Abiola, allegedly under Dr. Bassey’s instructions.
Beyond Boders also learned that Abiola, who lived in Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, Ibeju Lekki, had asked her driver to take her to the clinic for the procedure.
Reports say she lost consciousness and struggled to breathe after the injection. Her driver then reported the incident to the police.
When asked about the ongoing investigation, Police PRO Benjamin Hundeyin stated that the doctor is now with the SCID, as further work is ongoing to uncover all the facts.
Further information, including possible charges against Dr. Bassey, will be available “after the investigation” is complete.
