Popular social critic and media influencer Martins Otse, known online as VeryDarkMan, has been detained by the police in Abuja.
He had gone to meet with the police on Wednesday in response to an official invitation.
VeryDarkMan’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the detention, sharing that VeryDarkMan has often reminded Nigerians that “the police are our friends,” though many do not see it that way.
“Our client, VDM, was detained after honoring the police invitation. He has repeatedly advocated that the Nigerian Police are our friends, despite common perceptions otherwise,” Adeyanju explained.
Recent reports suggest that VeryDarkMan apologized to the police for wearing clothing that looked like an official police uniform in one of his videos. He advised others to get permission before using any items that could be mistaken as police property.
