Joseph Aloba, father of the late singer Mohbad, was questioned by police in Lagos on Monday. This followed a complaint by Oba Saheed Elegushi.
Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba, died at 27 under mysterious circumstances. His death has led to many social media discussions and police investigations.
Monisola Odumosu, a lawyer for the Aloba family, said the complaint involves claims of cyberbullying, cyberstalking, and defamation. The issue arose after Mr. Aloba’s interview with a London-based blogger.
In the interview, Mr. Aloba allegedly said his son was bullied and killed on Oba Elegushi’s orders, with Sam Larry supposedly involved.
Mr. Aloba, during the police questioning, stated he did not intend to defame Oba Elegushi. He claimed he was only seeking justice for his son and had no solid proof to support his statements, aside from his late son’s petition and phone calls.
Odumosu noted, “Any grieving parent may on the spur of the moment make statements that may tend to be unreasonable.”
Oba Elegushi attended the meeting and requested a retraction of the statements. Mr. Aloba was not arrested or detained; he was released on bail.
Beyond Boders recalls that Mohbad was a former artiste with Marlian Music, owned by Naira Marley.
After Mohbad’s death on September 12, 2023, the Lagos State Police set up a special team to investigate. Naira Marley and Sam Larry were among those arrested.
Mohbad’s body was exhumed for an autopsy to find out the cause of death. However, the autopsy could not determine the cause due to body decomposition.
A U.S. lab mentioned by the Lagos State Government in connection with a toxicology test denied having any case for Mohbad, adding to the ongoing confusion surrounding his death.
