The United States is mourning the death of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100.
President Joe Biden has ordered American flags to fly at half-mast for 30 days to honour Carter’s life and legacy. He also declared January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning.
In a televised message from St. Croix, where he is spending the holidays, President Biden called Carter a dear friend and praised his life of service. “Jill and I lost a dear friend,” Biden said, adding that Carter’s influence was felt by millions around the world, whether they met him or not.
Biden highlighted their shared bond over cancer advocacy, stating, that America has “the talent and the resources to one day end cancer as we know it.”
He also called Carter a man of great character and courage and urged Americans to follow his example of service and compassion.
Vice President Kamala Harris remembered Carter as a man of deep faith and kindness. “His life and legacy continue to inspire me — and will inspire generations to come,” she said.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin also praised Carter’s work, noting his achievements in diplomacy and global security.
Carter’s leadership extended beyond his presidency. He was remembered for his humanitarian efforts through Habitat for Humanity and the Carter Centre, which worked to combat disease, promote peace, and support democracy worldwide.
Former President Barack Obama described Carter as a man of integrity and compassion who believed in honesty above all else. Carter “promised voters that he would always tell the truth. And he did – advocating for the public good, consequences be damned,” Obama said.
Former President George W. Bush called Carter “a man of deeply held convictions.”
Senate leaders Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell praised Carter for his humility and dedication to public service.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called him a role model and humanitarian.
