The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has asked Nigerians to stop using social media to report police misconduct.
Instead, he urged citizens to send their complaints to the Police Complaints Response Unit for proper handling.
Speaking at a conference for Police Public Relations Officers (PPROs) and Communication Experts in Asaba, Delta State, on Monday, Egbetokun explained that reporting issues on social media often leads to misinformation. He said this can damage the image of the police force.
“We appeal to the public not to resort to social media when reporting the conduct of police officers but rather use the Police Complaints Response Unit,” Egbetokun said.
The IG also acknowledged the power of social media in shaping opinions but warned that unverified information could harm the police’s reputation. He stressed the need for transparency and accountability within the force.
During the event, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State thanked the IG for his efforts in reforming the police and improving public trust.
Oborevwori noted that states like Delta and Lagos are difficult to police, making the IG’s experience as a former Commissioner of Police in Lagos valuable for leading the entire nation’s police force.
The conference highlighted the importance of strong communication between the police and the public. Both Egbetokun and Oborevwori emphasized the role of Police Public Relations Officers in promoting trust and addressing false information.
“This conference is part of police reform, aimed at building trust and respect, which will, in turn, help us gain public trust,” Egbetokun said.
