The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has begun a seven-day warning strike across Nigeria.
This action is in response to the ongoing captivity of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a NARD member who has been held hostage for over eight months.
Dr. Dele Abdullahi, the NARD President, announced that the strike would start at midnight on Monday, August 26, 2024. He explained that the decision was made during an emergency online meeting held on Sunday, August 25, 2024.
During this warning strike, resident doctors will not provide any emergency services.
Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who works in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, was kidnapped nearly eight months ago, along with her husband and nephew. While her husband was freed in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew are still in captivity.
Recently, NARD members protested at various hospitals nationwide, demanding the immediate release of Dr. Popoola.
