Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has accused some Nigerian musicians of being involved in money laundering.
In a recent video, Kuti expressed frustration, questioning how certain artistes, with very few songs, can afford expensive lifestyles. He mentioned things like owning hotels and driving luxury cars like G-Wagons and Rolls-Royces.
Kuti asked, “Where is the money coming from?” He believes that some artistes’ wealth is suspicious, comparing this to his own 20-year career, where he has struggled to build even one house, suggesting that the music industry alone does not make enough money for such lavish spending.
Kuti also mentioned the case of crossdresser Bobrisky, whose money laundering charges were dropped recently.
He urged young people to look closely at the reality of the music industry and be aware of artistes who may be involved in illegal activities.
“If I speak out, they’ll label it jealousy,” Kuti added, stating that his concerns are not about envy. He said he is worried about how some artistes may be taking advantage of their own community.
“This is not about being poor or rich; it’s about the game being played,” Kuti said.
