Vice-President Kashim Shettima, speaking at a recent event, acknowledged the widespread discontent among Nigerians grappling with economic challenges.
This marked a significant moment as a senior government official openly addressed the biting hardships intensified since President Bola Tinubu assumed office.
As gathered by Beyond Boders, the economic woes include a surge in petrol prices, soaring from N238-N263 per litre to a minimum of N500 shortly after the President declared the end of petrol subsidies.
As citizens adapted to the new reality, the Federal Government’s decision to let the naira’s exchange rate fluctuate based on demand and supply led to a substantial depreciation, reaching an all-time low of N1,099.05/$ on Friday.
In response to the escalating cost of living, it was reported that families are preparing for a challenging festive season, devising ways to cut costs.

VP Shettima, recognizing the growing anger among the poor, urged an improvement in the quality of governance within the limited window of 10 to 20 years.
Highlighting the need for job creation to alleviate insecurity, Shettima emphasized, “Let’s create jobs; let’s give hope to the populace. And once we create jobs, all this madness of insecurity will disappear.”
He urged citizens to be patient with President Tinubu, emphasizing the collective responsibility to support efforts to redefine modern leadership.
In a critical tone, Shettima criticized those advocating for secession, stating, “They don’t think beyond the depth of their pockets. Surviving their way on the growth of the innocent and the agonies of our people will not do us any good.”
Meanwhile, at the same event, Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, announced plans for the domestic production of unmanned aerial vehicles and AK-47s.
This initiative aims to reduce reliance on foreign weapons, with Bichi stating, “When we reach the destination, we will save the country from the pain of the resources being chunked out to buy such weapons.”
Bichi assured other security agencies of the DSS’s commitment to providing proactive intelligence. He also encouraged residents of Plateau and Kaduna states to turn hostilities into job opportunities for regional development.
In closing, he urged Nigerians to avoid disparaging their leaders, emphasizing patience and dialogue for the nation’s progress in a democratic dispensation
