The Anambra State Police Command has explained the shooting incident that happened at Izuchukwu Junction along the Nnobi/Nnewi Road on Wednesday, November 20, around 7 PM.
In a statement by the police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the command confirmed the shooting but said it was caused by a misunderstanding. Security officers mistakenly thought police operatives were hostile and opened fire on them.
“The attack on the operatives was not from non state actors or any attempt to disrupt the burial of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah,” Ikenga stated.
Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who passed away in London in July, is set to be buried on Friday, November 22.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the shooting began after security personnel following a suspect reached a checkpoint.
During the exchange, bullets struck the fuel tank of a Toyota Venza sedan carrying police operatives, causing the vehicle to catch fire. Two passers-by were injured and taken to a hospital for treatment.
The police assured residents that the area is now calm, with Joint Security Forces deployed to maintain order during the burial ceremonies. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The police urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
