A Federal High Court in Lagos has postponed the hearing of a N5 billion lawsuit filed against popular gospel singer Sinach until January 2025.
The case involves claims of copyright infringement over her 2016 hit song, “Way Maker.”
The lawsuit was brought by music producer Michael Oluwole, also known as Maye. He is asking the court to declare him a co-author and co-owner of the song.
Maye claims he worked on the recording, mixing, and mastering of “Way Maker” and added instrumental accompaniments like piano, strings, and synthesizers. He says Sinach released the song without his consent or proper payment.
In the lawsuit, marked FHC/L/CS/402/2024, Maye is also demanding N5 billion in damages. He wants the court to order Sinach to share the earnings from the song with him, arguing that there was no written agreement about his contributions.
In his statement to the court, Maye further seeks an injunction to stop her from using or performing the song without addressing his rights, adding that he created and performed several parts of the song, yet received no recognition or fair share of the proceeds.”
Sinach, through her lawyer Emeka Etiaba, denies the claims. She argues that Mayeās role was limited to mixing the master recording, for which he was paid $300.
She maintains that she is the sole author and creator of the song, having composed and arranged it before involving Maye.
The trial began on November 27, 2024, with arguments from the plaintiffās side. The court has now adjourned the case to January 29 and 30, 2025, to allow the defense to present its arguments.
Sinach, born Osinachi Kalu, is a globally recognized gospel artiste. Her song “Way Maker” has won several awards, including the ‘Song of the Year’ at the 51st GMA Dove Awards, making her the first Nigerian to receive the honour.
