TikTok, the popular short video app, has removed a staggering 1.7 million videos created by Nigerian users during the last part of 2023.
The company, owned by Bytedance, shared this information in its recent report.
Nigeria was among the top 50 countries where videos that violated TikTok’s rules came from during the same period. Overall, TikTok removed 176.5 million videos worldwide during this time frame, with Nigeria contributing significantly to this number.
The videos removed were found to have broken various rules set by TikTok, such as those concerning honesty, privacy, security, mental well-being, and respectful behaviour.
TikTok also took action against millions of fake or spam accounts. Around 169 million of these accounts were removed during this period.

Additionally, the platform addressed approximately 1.2 million bot comments linked to content discussing the Israel-Hamas conflict.
“We remain vigilant in our efforts to detect external threats and safeguard the platform from fake accounts and engagement. These threats persistently probe and attack our systems, leading to occasional fluctuations in the reported metrics within these areas,” TikTok stated in its report.
Moreover, TikTok removed a massive 1.03 billion likes from videos, along with 720 million fake followers and 4.9 billion fake follow requests.
These interactions were identified as being generated through automated or deceptive methods.
In terms of advertising, TikTok witnessed a rise in the removal of ads that violated its policies during the last quarter of 2023.
A total of 1.5 million ads were taken down for failing to adhere to TikTok’s advertising guidelines.
“We are continually reviewing and strengthening our systems to identify new patterns and quickly and accurately remove ads that violate our policies,” TikTok assured its users.
Despite these challenges, TikTok remains one of the most popular social media platforms globally.
A report from data.ai revealed that TikTok earned $3.8 billion in consumer spending from app stores in 2023, contributing to its total revenue of $10 billion.
