Doyin Okupe, the former head of the Obi/Datti presidential campaign, recently said that an agreement exists in Nigeria’s political structure where the north and south each govern for eight years.
Okupe shared his views in a recent interview on “Channels TV’s Politics Today” programme.
According to Okupe, President Muhammadu Buhari completed an eight-year term representing the north, and now President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, representing the south, may serve for another eight years if he wishes.
Okupe explained that Tinubu could win a second term in 2027 if he tackles the major problems affecting Nigeria, like fuel and food shortages. Okupe stated, “Tinubu is doing exceedingly well and he’s going to do much much better. Bola Tinubu needs understanding, not undermining.”
He added that Nigeria needs to endure current challenges to avoid a worse crisis. Okupe said he believes Tinubu will address these issues and lead the country to stability, urging Nigerians to give him time.
Okupe also highlighted that Tinubu knows he must succeed to win public support for a second term, adding, “Bola Tinubu is not a fool. He knows if he does not do this well between now and 2027, he will not have a chance.”
He reaffirmed the agreement for the eight-year terms between the north and south, noting that Tinubu, if successful, will complete his full term as long as his health allows and he desires to continue.
