Dr. Tony Asekhuno, a lecturer at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), has been accused of sexual harassment and misconduct by both former and current students.
Beyond Boders reports that these claims have caused widespread anger and calls for immediate action.
The accusations surfaced through tweets and social media posts where students shared their stories and asked for justice.
One student said that Dr. Asekhuno failed her three times in his logic class and then raped her in his office during her final year.
The University of Benin has not yet released an official statement about the accusations. However, the hashtag #TonyAsekhuno has been trending on social media, with many people demanding quick and strong action against the lecturer.
This scandal has brought up larger issues of sexual harassment in schools across West Africa.
In 2019, a BBC Africa Eye report revealed sexual misconduct by lecturers at the University of Ghana and the University of Lagos, which led to the suspension of some lecturers.
