The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has denied claims that it withdrew from the planned nationwide protest against economic hardship set for August 1.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, clarified that the union could not pull out of a protest it did not organize.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Ajaero said, “The Nigeria Labour Congress cannot withdraw from a protest that it did not organise. It is only the organisers of the speculated national protest that can decide to pull out or continue with the protest.”
Ajaero explained that the NLC follows a decision-making process, involving union leadership, before taking actions like protests.
“The fact that the Nigeria Labour Congress is not the body organising the protest does not mean that Organised Labour is oblivious of the dire living conditions Nigerians have been subjected to by the harsh economic policies of government,” he added.
Ajaero expressed solidarity with the Nigerian people during these tough times and urged President Bola Tinubu to talk with the protest leaders about their demands.
Beyond Boders further reports that he called on the government to listen to the people’s concerns.
The planned protest has gained support on social media with hashtags like #EndBadGovernance, #TinubuMustGo, and #Revolution2024.
The Presidency and police have asked youths to cancel the protest plans.
