Starting January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will stop working on Android phones with the KitKat operating system or older.
This decision was announced by Meta, the company that owns WhatsApp, to improve app security and add better features.
Meta explained that new features, like encryption updates, multi-device support, improved video calling, and AI tools, need newer software and hardware to work. Older devices cannot handle these features properly or protect user data as well.
“Older devices struggle to support new features and can’t protect user data effectively as technology advances,” Meta said.

From January 2025, WhatsApp will not work on these Android phones:
– Samsung:
Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
– Motorola:
Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E (2014)
– HTC:

iPhone Users Have Until May 2025
For iPhone users, WhatsApp will stop working after May 5, 2025, on devices using iOS 15.1 or older. This includes iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. To keep using WhatsApp, users must either update their iOS or switch to a newer phone.
Meta advises all users to check their device’s software and update if possible to avoid losing access to WhatsApp.
