Wike Wins as PDP Backs His Loyalists in Rivers Congress, Fubara Left Out

by Beyondboders

Former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike has gained an upper hand as the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) approved the controversial congresses in Rivers State, covering wards, local governments, and the state level.

This decision means that current Governor Siminalayi Fubara has lost control over the party in Rivers State.

Despite a court order from Rivers State that stopped the PDP from holding these congresses, the NWC still gave its approval.

There are reports that the next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP may be postponed from September 26 to October 26. This was decided during a meeting led by the acting national chairman of the PDP, Amb Iliya Damagum.

Previously, PDP governors had instructed the NWC to give control of the Rivers State congresses to Governor Fubara during a meeting in Jalingo, Taraba State.

However, Wike warned that he would make any PDP governor’s state ungovernable if they interfered in Rivers State politics.

In response, the PDP governors criticized Wike’s comments, calling them reckless and unacceptable. They reaffirmed their directive to return party control to Fubara.

Yet, in the latest NWC meeting, the Damagum-led team approved the congresses in Rivers State, despite objections from the National Legal Adviser, Adeyemi Ajibade, who argued it was unfair to recognize only the Rivers State congresses due to ongoing legal disputes. His objections were dismissed by the NWC.

The NWC also decided that congresses in states like Abia and Ebonyi should be completed before the next NEC meeting.

With the NEC meeting now set for October 26, the congresses will be officially confirmed, and a new national chairman may be chosen. Due to this situation, there are indications that Governor Fubara might speed up plans to join the Alliance Peoples Party (APP).
