The former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and is expected to appear in court today over allegations of a N110 billion fraud.
Beyond Boders reports that Bello was declared wanted earlier this year after failing to honor several EFCC invitations. He allegedly played a role in laundering over N110 billion, alongside some of his associates, by purchasing 12 properties in Abuja with the funds. These acts reportedly violate Sections 311 and 312 of the Penal Code.
The EFCC filed 16 charges against Bello and others, including Umar Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalam Hudu. Despite summons and court rulings, Bello repeatedly evaded arrest, with reports suggesting his successor, Governor Usman Ododo, assisted him on at least two occasions to avoid being taken into custody.
On Tuesday, EFCC officers detained Bello at their Abuja facility. A senior EFCC official confirmed that the arrest happened around 12:59 PM. Bello was interrogated for hours concerning the charges and remains in custody.
Justice Maryanne Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court had previously issued a public summons demanding Bello’s court appearance after he failed to show up on earlier dates. Today’s court session offers the EFCC an opportunity to begin his trial.

The EFCC has expressed its determination to ensure Bello faces justice. A source within the commission stated, “He will be at the FCT High Court tomorrow (today). Having evaded proceedings since the commencement of his trial, his arrest has presented us an opportunity to finally arraign him. I can assure you that he will have his day in court on Wednesday (today).”
Efforts to reach Bello’s media team and EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, for comments were unsuccessful as of the time of this report.
