A French court decided that a trophy awarded to Diego Maradona after the 1986 World Cup can be sold at an auction, despite his family’s objections.
Maradona’s family wanted to stop the sale of the Golden Ball trophy he won for being the best player at the 1986 World Cup. They started a legal action to prevent the auction.
Lawyer Gilles Moreu told The Associated Press that the court’s decision “was not favourable to the heirs of Diego Maradona,” as the auction is set to take place next Thursday in Paris at the Aguttes auction house.
The Golden Ball trophy had been missing for many years under unclear circumstances and only recently appeared again.
Maradona’s family said the trophy was stolen and that the current owner does not have the right to sell it.
