2024 BET Awards: Tems Wins Big, Other Nigerian Stars Miss Out (Full Winners List)

by Beyondboders

Nigerian music star Tems won the Dr. Bobby Jones “Best Gospel/Inspirational Award” at the 2024 BET Awards.

She beat famous gospel singers like Kirk Franklin, CeCe Winans, and Maverick City to take home the prize.

The event took place on Sunday at the Peacock Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles.

Tems’ winning song, “Me & U,” does not fully match the usual gospel style. However, she said the song is about her relationship with God and how she changed over time.

She wrote the song in 2021, but it was officially released on October 5, 2023. Tems, now 29 years old, has already won several BET awards, including Best International Act and Best Collaboration for her work on Wizkid’s “Essence” in 2022, and another Best Collaboration award in 2023 for her song “Wait for U” with Drake and Future.

Usher received a Lifetime Achievement Award and also won Best Male R&B/Pop Artiste.

SZA was named Best Female R&B/Pop Artiste. Killer Mike won Album of the Year, and Victoria Monét took home both the BET Her Award and Video of the Year for “On My Mama.”

The event brought together many stars from entertainment, media, and sports. Actress Taraji Henson hosted the awards for the third time, with many red-carpet appearances and unforgettable performances.

Nigerian Artistes Miss Out

While Tems celebrated her win, other Nigerian artistes did not fare as well. Asake and Ayra Starr missed out on the ‘Best International Act’ award, which went to Tyla.

Ayra Starr also lost the ‘BET Her’ Award to Victoria Monét and ‘Best New Artiste’ to Tyla. Seyi Vibez, who was nominated for the first time, lost the ‘Best New International Act’ award to South Africa’s Makhadzi.
